A Short and Simple Explanation of the Internet of Things

Businesses around the globe are talking about the Internet of Things. So if you haven’t heard of this progressively growing topic, it’s about time. This already existing force could drastically change the way we live and do our business. Though, there are a lot of complexities revolving around this technology, most might ask, what exactly is the Internet of Things and what impact it will have on homes and businesses. Today, Appcentric Solutions Inc. shares the foundations of this technology, for most people are still trying to understand what the buzz is all about.

What is the Internet of Things?

This technology enables all things to be connected to the internet and to each other. This includes everything from your mobile devices, kitchen appliances, home entertainment, clothes, footwear, wearable devices, and almost anything. The Internet of Things could also be integrated to machines and engines.

A recent survey made by Gartner says that in 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices to the internet. There are parties who claim that it could be higher and could reach over 100 billion. Having those set of information, we can say that the Internet of Things is an enormous network of connected “things” which also includes us. If we look at it in an angle, people can now talk to things and things could also now talk to other things.

How Could This Affect Us?

Since the beginning of time, we use communication to accomplish all sorts of things. In this case, it is being done digitally. To describe how the Internet of Things could affect our lives, let’s spill some of the countless possibilities. For example, when you open your eyes in the morning, sensors could takeover your morning daily routine. It could open the shower for you and regulate the water temperature. Once you step out of the shower, your coffeemaker will be notified to start brewing your favorite coffee.

Your fridge could also inform you that you are running low on some grocery items and could order it for you. Another example is your car could automatically start its engine, open the AC, and navigate your calendar for the day, choose the best route to take, and could even send messages to inform your friends or officemates that you are on your way or simply wish them a good morning. In an office setting, your equipment could notify you if a certain department is lacking some supplies already and could order it for you. Basically, the possibilities as they call it are “endless.” On a larger scale, the Internet of Things can also be applied in the areas of transportation, waste management, energy and utilities, logistics and a lot more.
